geoFootprint is here: The environmental footprint of crops on a world map

Businesses can kick off the year with smarter, faster sustainability decision-making with the launch of geoFootprint. Quantis’ geoFootprint tool is a game changer for companies aiming to better measure and manage the environmental footprint of crops in their supply chains. Questions about the impact of crops that were once nearly impossible to answer can now be resolved in a matter of minutes. geoFootprint gives companies with ambitious sustainability targets, like carbon neutrality, access to the sourcing insights necessary to turn their commitments into action.

Agrifood businesses have the opportunity to lead in reducing the environmental impact of agriculture, which is responsible for more than 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Until now, decision makers have faced critical knowledge gaps due to the complex, globalized nature of agricultural supply chains. geoFootprint removes this barrier by combining data from satellite imagery with environmental metrics and instantly simulating the footprints of key commodity crops on an interactive world map. From there, users can see which interventions would have the most positive impact on their supply chain’s footprint.

“geoFootprint promises to fulfill a valuable need for companies to better understand and ultimately to reduce their carbon footprints. The potential of the tool lies in combining spatially-detailed agricultural impacts with location-specific sourcing data."

geoFootprint brings an unprecedented level of precision to the sustainable sourcing of key commodity crops. From a global view by country, down to a granular resolution of 10×10-km pixels, users can instantly view, map and simulate the footprints of 15 crops. This allows businesses to:

  • Understand the factors that contribute to a crop’s spatial-specific footprint, like deforestation, fertilizer use irrigation and land management practices
  • Set science-driven targets and prioritize high-impact actions to improve corporate footprints
  • Identify risks to supply chains and business resilience
  • Track real progress toward sustainability goals
  • Engage stakeholders across the supply chain to accelerate progress
  • Make smarter sourcing decisions, faster

geoFootprint equips decision-makers with science-driven insights to inform more sustainable sourcing choices. With the enhanced knowledge provided by the tool, companies can make the case for sustainability internally and build engagement among teams, as well as influence suppliers. The opportunities extend beyond the business world: To build public knowledge on sustainable agriculture, the geoFootprint team created an open-access version of the tool that makes solid environmental data of key commodity crops accessible to non-expert audiences, students and stakeholders.

geoFootprint was built in partnership with more than 25 public, private and academic stakeholders, including arx iT, Cool Farm Alliance and leading agrifood companies. Quantis launched the initiative in 2018 with support from EIT Climate-KIC

We’re on a collaborative mission to transform agriculture for a better future for people and planet. Ready to hop on board? Join the geoFootprint adventure and equip your business with a tool for smarter, faster sustainability decision making.
