The new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) guidelines for flexible packaging tackle the challenges of assessing these complex products. Flexible packaging often consists of multilayer materials, such as plastics, aluminum, and paper, and involves diverse manufacturing processes like extrusion, lamination, and printing, each contributing to variability in energy use and emissions. These guidelines were developed collaboratively by Flexible Packaging Europe, six leading European packaging companies, and sustainability experts from Quantis. By aligning with international standards, they provide a consistent and practical framework to streamline LCA practices. Designed to assess and reduce environmental impacts across the entire life cycle, the guidelines aim to support more sustainable practices throughout the flexible packaging value chain.
