The cosmetics industry is entering a new chapter in sustainability with the official launch of EcoBeautyScore (EBS), which is the first global, science-based environmental scoring system for cosmetics and personal care products.
Empowering transparency through collective action
Developed over three years by the not-for-profit EBS Association and co-created with more than 70 leading cosmetics and personal care companies and associations, the scoring system provides a consistent, transparent and credible way to assess and communicate the environmental footprint of cosmetics and personal care products.
Built on the EU’s Product Environmental Footprint methodology, the tool evaluates a product’s impact on air, land and water across its full lifecycle — from ingredient sourcing to end-of-use — and assigns an A to E score.
A trusted system to meet growing consumer expectations
As beauty and personal care spending continues to climb, with spending expected to exceed $150 billion in Europe by 2025, so does consumer demand for honest, science-based sustainability information. Yet many still question whether brands’ claims reflect true impact.
EBS answers this challenge with a rigorous, third-party verified approach that cuts through greenwashing and delivers clarity. In a global study, two-thirds of consumers said the EBS label builds trust, and the majority intend to use it to guide their purchases.
Quantis: Driving transformation at industry level
At Quantis, we’re proud to have supported the EBS Association as a science-based sustainability advisor, helping in building the methodology, the shared industry database, the scoring system and harmonized consumer communications that brings measurable impact and greater accountability to the sector.
“This is a groundbreaking collaborative initiative, and a giant step towards enabling consumers to make more informed purchasing decisions for sustainable beauty routines.”
